How the formula works
- Fence run = total length − (gates × 4 ft).
- Sections = ceil(run ÷ post spacing). Line posts = sections + 1, plus 1 extra post per gate (each gate needs a post on both sides).
- Wood rails = sections × (2 rails if height ≤ 4 ft, 3 if taller).
- Pickets (5.5 in wide): side-by-side = ceil(run × 12 ÷ 5.5); board-on-board ≈ 1.5× that (overlap).
- Vinyl uses pre-built panels: one panel per section. Chain-link uses fabric (run, in rolls of 50 ft), top rail (run, 21 ft sticks), and tension bars/bands on terminal posts.
- Concrete: ~2 × 50 lb bags per post (10 in hole, 1/3 post length deep). Gate posts get 3.
- Waste factor is applied to pickets, rails and fabric (cut-able material), not to posts or hardware.
Don't forget
- Call 811 at least 2 business days before digging (Texas law) to mark buried lines.
- Permits: Sherman requires a fence permit and inspection; Denison requires one for new fences and repairs of 20 ft+. Check your city.
- Check HOA covenants — that is a separate approval from the city.
- Confirm your property line (survey/plat) before setting corner posts.
- North Texas clay heaves: set posts below the frost/clay-active zone and crown the concrete to shed water.
- Buy gate hardware (hinges, latch, drop rod) with the posts — it is the most common forgotten item.
Worked example
150 ft of 6 ft wood (side-by-side), posts every 8 ft, 1 gate, 10% waste: run = 146 ft, 19 sections, 21 posts.
| Posts (4×4 or steel) | 21 ea |
| Rails 2×4 × 8 ft | 63 ea |
| Pickets 1×6 × 6 ft | 351 ea |
| Fence nails/screws | 6 lb |
| Concrete (50 lb bags) | 44 bags |
| Gate kits (hinges + latch) | 1 sets |
