How we calculate

  1. Slab volume (cu ft) = length × width × thickness ÷ 12. Post holes = count × (π × radius² × depth − post size² × depth). Waste is added before rounding.
  2. Cubic yards = cu ft ÷ 27. Ready-mix is rounded up to the next ¼ yard.
  3. Bags = cu ft ÷ bag yield, rounded up. Quikrete yields: 80 lb ≈ 0.60 cu ft (45 per yard), 60 lb ≈ 0.45 cu ft (60 per yard), 50 lb fast-setting ≈ 0.375 cu ft.
  4. Wire mesh: 42 in × 84 in remesh sheets (24.5 sq ft each), area × 1.1 for overlap.
  5. Rebar: bars each way = (span ÷ spacing, rounded up) + 1, times the bar length, in 20 ft sticks plus 10% for laps. Chairs at about 1 per 4 sq ft (rule of thumb).
  6. Gravel base: area × depth ÷ 27 cu yd, and about 1.4 tons per cu yd (assumption; varies by stone).
  7. Forms: the slab perimeter in 2×6×8 boards, with a stake every 3 ft.

Prices (estimates, November 3, 2026)

Bag and mesh prices marked “checked” were checked Nov 3, 2026 at a North Texas Home Depot. Items marked “unverified” have not been checked at a local store yet. Rebar, chairs, gravel and form lumber are shown as “not priced” rather than guessed. The installed range is Angi's Dallas figure, not a quote.

Bags per cubic yard

Quikrete 60 lb Concrete Mix0.45 cu ft60$4.85unverified
Quikrete 50 lb Fast-Setting0.375 cu ft72$7.97checked Nov 3, 2026

Per cubic yard in bags: about $269 with 80 lb bags, versus a published DFW ready-mix range of $119–$141 per yard (unverified, secondary source; small-load fees apply). Above roughly 1 yard, ready-mix is usually cheaper and easier. That is a rule of thumb, not a cutoff.

Worked example: 10×10 patio, 4 in thick

10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.3 cu ft, plus 10% waste = 36.7 cu ft (1.36 cu yd).

ItemQtyCost
80 lb concrete bags36.7 ÷ 0.60, rounded up62$371
Remesh sheets110 sq ft ÷ 24.55$79
Concrete + mesh$450

Gravel, forms, tools, delivery and tax are not included. Angi's average for a 10×10 slab is about $600 installed. Ready-mix would be 1.5 yd.

Concrete calculator FAQ

How many 80 lb bags of concrete make a yard?

45. Each Quikrete 80 lb bag makes about 0.60 cu ft, and a cubic yard is 27 cu ft. With 60 lb bags (0.45 cu ft) it takes 60.

How many bags of concrete for a 10×10 slab?

A 10×10 slab 4 in thick is 33.3 cu ft. With 10% waste that is 36.7 cu ft, or 62 bags of 80 lb mix (82 bags of 60 lb).

Should I use bags or ready-mix?

Above about 1 cubic yard, ready-mix is usually cheaper and much less work. 1 yard is about 45 bags of 80 lb mix. Small loads often carry a short-load fee, so ask the plant.

How thick should a concrete slab be in North Texas?

4 in is typical for patios and walks, 5–6 in for driveways, and 6 in for RV pads. On heavy DFW clay, many contractors go to 5 in with #4 rebar.

Rebar or wire mesh?

Mesh helps control cracking on thin patios and walks. Rebar adds strength and is the common choice for driveways and slabs on expansive clay. Ask your contractor what they recommend for your soil.

How much does a concrete slab cost per square foot in DFW?

Angi puts Dallas at about $4–$8 per sq ft installed. Reinforcement, thickness, finish and tear-out push it up, and small jobs cost more per foot.

How many bags of concrete per post hole?

For a 10 in hole 36 in deep around a 4×4, about 1.4 cu ft, or about 2.3 bags of 80 lb mix (3.7 bags of 50 lb fast-setting). Use the post holes tab for your size.
