How we calculate

  1. Volume (cu ft) = length × width × depth ÷ 12. Waste is added before converting units.
  2. Cubic yards = cu ft ÷ 27.
  3. Tons = cubic yards × density for the stone type (see the table below). Densities are typical compacted rules of thumb used by landscape suppliers; actual weight varies with moisture and rock.
  4. Bags = cu ft ÷ bag yield, rounded up. Most Vigoro / Pavestone bags at Home Depot are 0.5 cu ft; Snow White Marble Chips are 0.40 cu ft.
  5. Cost uses the single-bag Sherman Home Depot price. At 64+ bags we switch to the published pallet per-bag price. We do not show a bulk-delivered per-ton or per-yard price, because that was not checked at a local yard.

Prices (Sherman Home Depot, November 6, 2026)

Every bag price below was checked live Nov 6, 2026 at the Home Depot in Sherman (store #0518, ZIP 75090). Prices change, so check again before you buy. Bulk delivery from a local yard is usually cheaper for jobs over about 1 cubic yard — ask them for a per-ton or per-yard quote.

Recommended depth and stone by use

UseDepthTypical stone
Drivewaycompact in lifts4–6 inCrushed stone / all-purpose gravel
Patio / paver baseplus 1 in sand4 inPaver base, then paver sand

These are common residential rules of thumb for North Texas. Local soil, slope and drainage can change what you need — ask a contractor for driveways and French drains.

Density by stone type (tons per cubic yard)

StoneTons / cu ydNotes
Pea gravel1.35Rounded, drains well
All-purpose / crushed1.40Compacts for drives and drains
Paver base1.35Graded crush for paver beds
Paver sand1.30Leveling layer under pavers
River / pond pebble1.25Decorative, rounded
Lava rock0.75Lightweight; covers more area per ton
Marble chips1.35Decorative; bags are 0.40 cu ft

Densities are typical compacted figures used by landscape suppliers. Wet rock weighs more; loose rock weighs less. Use tons when ordering bulk delivery; use cubic yards or bags when buying at the store.

Checked Nov 6, 2026 at Home Depot Sherman #0518. No 50 lb paver base is sold there — 0.5 cu ft is the standard bag. 64+ is the published pallet per-bag price.

Worked example: 10×10 patio base, 4 in thick

Assumptions: 10 ft × 10 ft, 4 in of paver base, 10% waste, 0.5 cu ft bags at the Sherman Home Depot price (checked Nov 6, 2026). Sand, edge restraint, pavers, delivery and tax are not included.

ItemQtyCost
Volume10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.3 cu ft + 10%36.7 cu ft≈ 1.36 cu yd · ≈ 1.83 tons—
Paver base bags36.7 ÷ 0.5, rounded up · 64+ price $5.8274$430.68
Bag total$430.68

At 1.36 cubic yards, this is past the point where bag-buying usually makes sense. A local landscape yard will almost always beat $430 for a little over a yard of paver base delivered — we just have not verified a Sherman-area bulk price yet, so we leave that blank rather than guess.

Bags vs. bulk delivery

Gravel calculator FAQ

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply length × width × depth (in feet; divide inches by 12). That gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards, or multiply cubic yards by the stone's density for tons. The calculator does this for you and converts to bags.

How many bags of gravel in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. With 0.5 cu ft bags that is 54 bags before waste. Marble chips at 0.40 cu ft take about 68 bags per yard.

How many tons of gravel do I need?

Tons = cubic yards × density. Pea gravel is about 1.35 tons per yard, crushed/all-purpose about 1.40, lava rock about 0.75. The calculator shows tons for the stone you pick.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed stone is typical for a residential gravel driveway. Compact in lifts rather than dumping it all at once.

How deep should paver base be?

4 inches of compacted paver base, plus about 1 inch of paver sand on top, is the common residential build-up under concrete pavers.

Bags or bulk delivery?

Bags are fine under about 1 cubic yard. Above that, a local landscape yard is usually cheaper per ton or per yard delivered. We price bags from a checked Home Depot list and leave bulk blank until we verify a local rate.

Do the prices include tax and delivery?

No. Bag prices are the Sherman Home Depot shelf prices checked Nov 6, 2026. Tax, delivery and bulk yard rates are separate.
